Today we’ll concentrate on indoor air quality. This is the time of year when all the pollen and allergens get in the air and have an effect on many of us.

The pollen and all is outside, how does that become an “Indoor Air Quality” issue?

There are many ways the pollutants, allergens, and pollen get in the house. We bring it in on our clothing and shoes every time we return from outside. The children and the pets bring them back inside. We like to open windows and “air out” our homes. Plus, they can get in through duct leaks and just opening the doors.

Once they get in, they stay in unless you remove them from the air.

How is that accomplished? The one word answer to that is Filtration! You have to get those particles out of the air to prevent the allergies. There are many ways to filter the air in your home and many degrees of filtration.

The standard 3-for-4 dollars fiberglass filters will not do much to alleviate these issues. You can use media (paper) pleated filters that filter better but can cause air flow problems for the equipment. They are available in widths from 1 inch to about 5, and must be installed by a professional to prevent problems. There are electronic and electro-magnetic filters that do a much better job.

What about live stuff like mold or viruses; can these filters help that? They would if you combine them with UV lighting technology that eliminates the living allergen problems. When you combine excellent filtration and UV lighting in a whole house system, you are providing pretty much hospital quality clean air for your home.

Change your filters and call us at 635-3452 if you have any indoor air quality issues. We can help!

Today we want to tell you about our Spring Newsletter, HOMESENSE! This is the informative and educational publication we send absolutely FREE to all our friends that do business with us here at Quality Service. It’s a great customer newsletter that has a lot of wonderful information in it. Some of which isn’t even related to air conditioning and heating. In this issue, there’s a great article about tax breaks that are available to you when you install high efficiency heating and cooling equipment. Yes, there are even ways you can turn your cooling system into an ATM. (It won’t actually dispense cash, but the effects are the same)

Here’s another example: Did you know that strategic landscaping could save energy? How much cooling effect will one good shade tree provide?

Also in the latest HOMESENSE, you’ll find information on how and why home generators are such a hot commodity, ways to properly insure your home, and even advice on selecting the right paint color for the interior of your home.

In the “On the Homefront” section you’ll even find a piece about safe grilling practices to get us ready for summer grilling season. Did you know that you are NOT supposed to use the used marinade as a sauce after the raw meat is cooked? There are still potentially harmful bacteria in the marinade from the raw meat.

Even if you haven’t already joined the Quality Service family of customers, (we hope you do soon), we’ll be glad to give you a free copy of HOMESENSE, too. Just call us at 635-3452 and we’ll mail you one, or come by our office at 366 N. Main and pick up your free copy. Don’t forget to “change your filters!” We hope you have a great spring and summer.
